I shot some trees recently as a series and
shot some buildings as a series. Those two
ideas led me to see the picture here with two of
my favourite subjects together. I was there
to shoot the building for a company but
thought I may as well take some photos for
myself.

An article in the Sun about the bare trees in
winter seeming like architectural shapes
and the need to shoot something for a course
in conceptual photography got me out lying on
the ground looking up at branches on a sunny
day in December.

travel photo class at the club. I'm open to

I don't usually get to be the subject but one
of my students at my class at West Point Grey
Community Centre, Markus Heller, caught me
in pretty good light as we were talking about
shooting portraits in window light.
Window light is beautiful and free. Get your
subject close to a big window, not in direct sunlight,
and use a reflector to fill in the shadow side
of the face.

We practiced using flash for fill light

This quickly done pic looked dark, so
I made it a lot lighter in Photoshop.
Then I got rid of the branches, cropped,
and lightened up the eyes a bit.
Only a few minutes of post production
makes a poor snap into a decent portrait.

College, Vancouver, starting May 5, 2011 and lasting 12 Thursday
evenings until July 21. Time is 6:30-9:30 pm, which will allow for
